I recently received an interesting question about the Theory of Evolution.
Thank you for your question !

Question:
Recently I have seen the Theory of Evolution in the news a lot.  It's such an emotional
topic.  Can I believe in the Theory of Evolution and still be a Christian who also believes in the Bible?

Answer:  Evolution is an emotional topic!  Much of the emotion comes from confusing apples with
oranges.   The Theory of Evolution is just that, it's a theory.  A theory attempts to explain what we
see around us.  When a theory is proven wrong, we adopt another theory.  For example, there
was an early theory that the world was flat and sat in the center of the universe.  This was proven
wrong and replaced with a better theory.  Notice that the theory of a flat world or a round world
says NOTHING about how the world was created.

The same is true for the Theory of Evolution.  It is a helpful theory for explaining the diversity of
species around us and the transmission of characteristics within species.  It attempts to explain
how a diversity of species could blossom from a few number of species in the early times of earth
history.  Trying to use that theory to explain how atoms and molecules got together to make living
matter is where the theory gets expanded beyond its means.

For Christians, the Bible explains the God given process of creation.  What can be confusing is
whether we can believe the biblical account of creation and also accept (note: you don't have to
"believe" in the theory to accept it or use it) the Theory of Evolution as a useful explanation of
what we see around us.

The answer is "yes" we can.  Certainly we can believe that God in all His glory created the
universe, the world, and the creatures of the world.  His wonderful creation process occurs outside
of time in God's way as he sees fit.  We creatures who live in the dimension of time have a certain,
progerssive way of experiencing the world around us.  What is important to realize is that HOW we
experience the world says NOTHING about how it was created.

So, God can be off in His workshop creating things His way while we experience them in a very
different way.  Thus, theories we develop to explain what we SEE don't in any way have to
contradict what we believe about creation.  The bible as the revealed and true word of God is
sacred to us and should inform our belief of our purpose in God's grand design.
